To get cited by AI assistants, make your site readable to their crawlers, state plainly who you are and what you do, answer your buyers' questions directly on your pages, and build a consistent presence on the review sites and directories the engines draw from. Then check the answers every month to see what changed.
1. Let the crawlers in
Check your robots.txt for rules that block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, and make sure your main content is in the HTML rather than loaded later by JavaScript. Publish an llms.txt file at the root of your site that summarises who you are and links to your key pages.
2. Make your business unambiguous
If another company shares a similar name, engines may mix you up. Add Organization markup with your legal name, location, founders and links to every official profile. Use the same name and description on your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directory listings.
3. Answer questions first, then explain
Open each service page with two or three sentences that say what the service is, who it is for and how it works. Use headings phrased as the questions buyers ask, and keep each answer understandable on its own. Engines quote passages, not whole pages.
4. Publish evidence
Case studies with clear numbers, named authors with real credentials, and dated articles give engines facts they can repeat with confidence. Vague claims are rarely quoted.
5. Be present where engines look
- Review platforms and agency directories relevant to your industry.
- Your Google Business Profile, with reviews from real clients.
- Industry lists, interviews and contributed articles.
- Helpful answers in community forums where your buyers ask questions.
6. Measure every month
Write down twenty or so questions a buyer might ask, from your brand name to your service and city. Ask them in each major AI engine monthly and record whether you are mentioned, linked and described correctly. Watch visits from AI assistants in your analytics. Over a few months, this shows which fixes are working.
