AEO vs SEO: what is the difference, and do you need both?

AEO does not replace SEO. It changes what good SEO has to produce.

AEO vs SEO: what is the difference, and do you need both?

SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank your pages in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to get your business named or cited inside an answer written by an AI assistant. Most businesses need both, because AI engines rely on the same crawlable, well-structured content that SEO produces.

What they share

  • Pages that load fast, render without JavaScript and can be crawled.
  • Content that matches what people actually search for.
  • Authority built from links and mentions on other sites.

Where they differ

  • The unit of success: SEO wins a ranking position, AEO wins a mention or citation.
  • The content shape: AEO favours short, self-contained answers that an engine can lift as they are.
  • Entity clarity: AEO needs the engine to be certain which business you are, so structured data and consistent profiles matter more.
  • Third-party sources: reviews, directories and community threads carry more weight in AI answers than in classic rankings.
  • Measurement: SEO uses rankings and traffic; AEO tracks how often engines mention you for a fixed set of questions.

Do you need both?

If buyers research your category online, yes. SEO still drives most measurable traffic, and AI engines often cite pages that already rank. AEO adds the work that turns those pages into answers and makes sure the engine connects them to your business. In practice the two run as one programme with an extra layer of entity, content and off-site work.
